Cart Terminal Network Settings and Requirements

January 26, 2026January 26, 2026

A fast, stable internet connection is critical for your credit card terminal to work properly. If your network is slow or unreliable, you may experience failed transactions, payment delays, or connectivity issues. This guide will help you make sure your setup is ready for reliable, secure processing.

Recommended Network Speeds for Processing

For the best results, your credit card terminal should have a strong internet connection. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Minimum speed (single device): 5 Mbps
  • Recommended speed: 25 Mbps or higher
  • For software updates: 10–15 Mbps minimum

💡Note: These speeds apply when the terminal is the only device using the connection. If you have other equipment—like computers, tablets, printers, or phones—your internet plan should be faster to support all the activity.

Ideal Internet Plans

Most modern internet providers offer plans ranging from 25 Mbps to 10 Gbps or more. For small businesses, we recommend choosing a plan that provides at least 250 Mbps to handle daily operations, updates, and all other internet activity you will have during normal business operations.

How to Check Your Network Speed

Run a speed test to check your current internet performance:

Test from Both Wired and Wi-Fi Connections

Use a wired device (like a desktop with an Ethernet cable) to test your true Internet Service Provider (ISP) speed.

Use a phone or tablet on Wi-Fi to test your wireless coverage. Run this test in the area where your terminal will be used to identify any dead/slow zones you may have.

Common Hotspot Speeds

  • 4G hotspot: Up to ~49 Mbps in ideal conditions
  • 5G hotspot: Up to ~114 Mbps in ideal conditions

💡Note: Mobile phone hotspots vary greatly and are not recommended for long-term use. They’re fine for short-term setups like events, but not for regular processing.

Troubleshooting Low Speeds

If your terminal isn’t meeting the speed requirements:

  1. Use a wired connection: Connect your terminal using a Ethernet cradle or USB C Ethernet adapter.
  2. Move the terminal closer to the Wi-Fi router: Recheck the speed to see if there’s improvement.
  3. Check your ISP plan: Ensure you're getting the speed you’re paying for. If needed, contact your provider to troubleshoot or upgrade your bandwidth, as well as your network router hardware.
